Your switchboard is the control point for the electrical circuits throughout your property. It distributes power, houses protective devices and should disconnect electricity when certain faults occur.
When the switchboard is outdated, damaged or no longer suitable for the property’s electrical demand, the warning signs should not be ignored.
Sydney has a mix of heritage terraces, older apartment buildings, post-war homes and heavily modified commercial properties. Some still have ceramic fuses, ageing enclosures or boards that have been altered repeatedly as new circuits and appliances were added.
An old board is not automatically unsafe, but it deserves a proper inspection rather than guesswork.
Here are seven signs it may be time to arrange a switchboard assessment.
1. Your switchboard still uses ceramic fuses
Ceramic rewireable fuses are common in older Australian properties. They were designed for a very different level of household electrical demand and do not provide the same functionality as modern circuit protection.
If your board contains removable ceramic fuse carriers or fuse wire, have a licensed electrician assess the installation.
The condition of the enclosure, cabling, earthing, main switch and available safety-switch protection all need to be considered together.
2. There is little or no RCD protection
Residual current devices, commonly called RCDs or safety switches, are designed to disconnect the electricity supply when harmful leakage to earth is detected.
SafeWork NSW explains that RCDs provide a high level of personal protection from electric shock, although they cannot protect against every possible electrical hazard.
Do not assume that one device labelled “safety switch” protects every circuit.
A licensed electrician can identify which circuits are protected, test the devices and explain whether the board is suitable for the current installation.
NSW Government guidance recommends checking the condition of the switchboard and whether a safety switch is fitted. It also recommends testing the safety switch every six months using the device’s test button.
3. Circuits trip repeatedly
One trip can be caused by a faulty appliance or a temporary event. Repeated tripping is different.
It can indicate an appliance fault, damaged cabling, moisture, circuit overloading or another problem that requires testing.
Continually resetting the device without finding the cause is a poor response.
If the same circuit trips again, unplug appliances where it is safe to do so and arrange professional electrical fault finding.
Never hold a breaker on, bypass a safety device or replace a protective device with a higher rating to stop it tripping.
4. You notice heat, buzzing or a burning smell
A burning smell, buzzing, crackling, discolouration or unusual heat around a switchboard needs urgent attention.
These symptoms can indicate a loose connection, damaged protective device or overheating component.
Do not remove the switchboard cover or touch damaged equipment. Keep people clear and call a licensed electrician.
If there is smoke, fire or immediate danger, contact emergency services.
5. The enclosure is damaged, corroded or overcrowded
Broken covers, missing blanks, rust, water entry, loose components and untidy additions can all justify closer investigation.
A board may also have no practical room for the new circuits required by air conditioning, induction cooking, an electric hot-water system, a home office or other upgrades.
Overcrowding is not solved by forcing more equipment into the existing enclosure.
The electrician must assess the complete installation, the available supply and the future load before recommending the right solution.
6. You are renovating or adding major electrical loads
A renovation is the right time to check whether the switchboard can support the finished property.
Kitchens, laundries, air-conditioning systems, workshops, commercial equipment and other fixed appliances may need dedicated circuits and appropriate protection.
Planning this early prevents rushed variations after walls are closed or cabinetry is installed.
It also allows your electrician to coordinate any required work involving metering, consumer mains or the electricity network.
7. The board has no clear circuit labelling or compliance history
Poor labelling makes isolation slower and more confusing during a fault or emergency.
It can also be a sign that circuits have been modified over time without consistent documentation.
In NSW, electrical wiring work must be carried out by, or under the supervision of, a licensed electrician.
Following electrical work, the relevant testing and Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work requirements apply. From 1 July 2026, CCEWs must be submitted through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal.
Ask what will be tested, what documentation will be provided and how the completed board will be labelled.
What happens during a switchboard assessment?
A proper assessment may include:
- Identifying the existing protective devices and the circuits they control
- Checking visible signs of heat, damage, corrosion or unsafe access
- Reviewing the condition and capacity of the enclosure
- Testing safety switches and relevant parts of the installation
- Checking earthing and circuit identification
- Discussing current electrical demand and planned future loads
- Identifying whether asbestos-containing material may be present
- Confirming whether additional specialist or electricity-network work is required
The right recommendation depends on the property.
Some boards need targeted rectification, while others are better replaced with a modern enclosure and appropriately selected protective devices.
A note about asbestos-backed switchboards
Some older switchboards may contain asbestos-containing backing panels.
Do not drill, cut or disturb a suspected panel.
Its condition and the proposed work should be assessed before the upgrade proceeds, with removal handled under the applicable NSW asbestos requirements.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
The timeframe depends on the existing installation, access, number of circuits, testing results and whether metering, consumer mains, network coordination or asbestos work is involved.
A straightforward residential upgrade may be completed within a working day, while complex strata or commercial work can require more planning and staged shutdowns.
Any contractor promising an exact timeframe without seeing the board is guessing.
